Using a shampoo
Shampoo is applied to your scalp, which is where build-up often occurs. Massage your scalp well with your fingers or use a massage brush. While rinsing, the shampoo will clean the rest of your hair.
Use of a conditioner
Apply conditioner to the ends, working upwards but making sure you avoid the scalp. While the conditioner is working you can use a coarse brush / comb to comb through your curls so that the tangles easily disappear.
Use of a co-wash
A co-wash is a shampoo and conditioner in 1. You can apply it to the entire hair and scalp. Be sure to take out any tangles with a coarse brush or comb while soaking.
Use of a mask
You can use a mask without using a shampoo before (if you do not experience build-up) or use it after a (clarifying) shampoo. The mask you apply on your curls and not on your scalp. A mask nourishes your curls and should be left on for at least 15-30 minutes. During the soaking you can use a coarse brush to remove the tangles.
Use of a Leave-in
You use a leave-in after washing and before applying styling products such as a gel or foam. A leave-in gives extra nutrition to your curls, use little if you have thin and little hair, because these can experience it as aggravating. Use more if you have lots and thicker hair. Do not rinse out the leave-in.
Use of a gel
A gel will give you more defined curls. It can also make your curls hard (cast) these you squeeze out when your curls are completely dry. Use the gel on damp or wet hair. Of course you need to test what your curls do best on, damp or soaking wet hair.
Use of a mousse/foam
A mousse / foam you use alone or together with a gel. It can give more volume to your curls. Apply to damp or soaking wet hair. A mouse can also be used as a refresh on day 2 or 3. Spray your hair slightly damp, apply the foam, and let it dry.
Use of a hairspray
Use of a oil
Use of a hydrophilic/microfiber towel
With a microfiber towel you plop your curls without causing frizz. Also, you can use the towel to squeeze out excess water/product to get beautifully defined curls before you let it dry
Using a Scrunch It Brush
In this video, Denise shows you how to use the 2 different brushes and what the difference is.
On the left is the big clumps brush, it provides defined curls. On the right she uses the small clumps brush, it creates defined curls but also more volume.
Use of a Denman D3/D4
In this video, Denise shows you how to use the Denman. On the left she uses the Denman D3 and on the right the Denman D4. Both give definition but the D4 also provides more volume with the same styling technique.
Use of a Denman D12
If you find a brush too much hassle then this brush is a super easy way to get defined curls. The advantage is that with this comb you can grab a larger piece of hair to comb through. Because the teeth of this comb are close together you get lots and thin clumps and this provides definition and volume.
